Hello Fellow Dietetic Colleagues,

Finally, here are the results from our round table discussions last November 29 at the Nutrition Innovation Lab Symposium. I see from some emails that some of you have already begun acting on these suggestions. Bravo! Let’s use this platform on the Feed the Future Nutrition Innovation Lab website to continue discussions and information sharing. Next step is for our group to update the progress toward resolution for each of these actionable items.

And remember from the workshop, this is going to take, "work."

Actions identified by you to be taken to improve the dietetics profession in Nepal.

ACCREDITATION - is necessary in Nepal.

  • Promote government and academic cooperation
  • Explore how other allied health professionals are licensed and accredited.
  • Exam
  • Policies and procedures in hospitals on ordering a dietitian consult
  • Set up a nutrition committee in the hospital made up of all health professionals

STANDARD CURRICULUM

Beneficial to the dietetics practice and individual dietitian

  • Uniform course requirements
  • Assess current curriculum
  • Assess faculty competency to teach

STANDARDIZE INTERNSHIP

Increases knowledge and adds value to the profession. To begin, may need to partner with physicians

  • EVIDENCE – BASED CRITERIA FOR EVLAUATION OF STUDENTS
  • Use global time of 1200 hours minimum
  • Produce competent graduate registered dietitian
  • Consider applying to internship and maybe pay a fee
  • Involve medical doctors in training
  • Certify preceptors with training
  • Create specialization for current dietitians

ASSOCIATION THAT IS ACTIVE FOR DIETITIANS

Things to work on as the Association

  • #1 PROMOTE VALUE
  • From other health professionals
  • Health sectors of government
  • Push for government standards
  • Increase positions available
  • Increase awareness of skills
  • Advertise the dietitian to the public sector
  • Explore how other health professionals have their positive image
  • Begin outcome studies in the hospital to identify nutrition problems and how dietitians are skilled to help with the problems
  • Begin outcome studies on how to prevent hospital stay and how much money the government would save and how much time the doctors would save.
  • Promote the idea of Food is Medicine

Thank you,
